Assemblyman Magee speaks out against Thruway toll hike

(Syracuse, NY – Aug. 17, 2012) Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson)  testified at the Thruway Authorities public hearing, held Aug. 17,  reiterating his opposition to the proposed 45 percent toll increase for commercial vehicles.

Earlier this summer Assemblyman Magee had written letters to the New York State Comptroller and to the New York State Thruway Authority’s Board of Directors, addressing the issue as a serious matter of concern and urging the Thruway to withdraw their proposal.

“Our families, businesses and farmers can’t afford this excessive toll hike,” Assemblyman Magee said. “This hike increase would drive up the costs of food and consumer goods at a time when many families are having trouble weathering our current economic climate.”

If the proposed increase goes into effect, it will be the fifth toll increase in the last seven years, Assemblyman Magee added.

“This toll hike would place a large burden on our small businesses and farms,” Assemblyman Magee said. “The dairy industry, the largest sector of our agricultural economy, relies heavily on truck transportation to connect their products to their costumers. This will force them to either absorb or drive up the cost of their products to offset the increased expenses.”

The public still has time to join Assemblyman Magee in his fight against the toll hike. To voice your opinion, please submit your comments by August 24 to:

“This toll hike is bad for businesses and bad for families” Assemblyman Magee concluded.

Mr. Magee: The web site for tollcomments@thruway.ny.gov is useable if you have “groupwise” setup. Those that don’t their message will not go through. As ours did not. Therefore, I am writing you. 45% increase in toll fares will kill NY economy and we will loose jobs. Truckers will refuse to use the thruway. I will refuse to use it. We are taxed to our limits now. The young are leaving NY because of the lack of jobs and taxes being to high. NO INCREASE IN THRUWAY TOLLS.
