(Hamilton, NY – Nov. 28, 2012) Colgate quarterback Gavin McCarney finished fifth in this year’s voting for the Walter Payton Award, presented annually to the NCAA Football Championship Division’s national player of the year.
McCarney, who just completed his junior season, helped the Raiders to an 8-4 season and an undefeated run through the Patriot League for the program’s seventh conference title. He was a late-season addition to the Payton Award watch list, and should be one of the awards’s favorites heading into next year.
“His season this year ranks right up there with the best I’ve seen at Colgate,” Raiders head coach Dick Biddle said. “We’ve had a lot of great quarterbacks, but, quite frankly, everybody got on his back and he carried this football team all the way to the playoffs.
“Under the circumstances of teams knowing what he was going to do, it probably ranks as the best I’ve seen for a player in one season at Colgate. He did it all.”
McCarney received 15 first-place votes, nine for second place, 10 third, six fourth and five fifth-place votes for a total of 158 points. There were 145 votes cast nationally by a panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries.
The top three recipients – Wofford fullback Eric Breitenstein, Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke and Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet – have been invited to The Sports Network’s FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel, Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
McCarney finished the season with a school-record 3,778 yards of total offense, compiling 2,372 through the air and 1,406 on the ground. His name now appears in the Colgate individual records section in 18 different categories.
