Canastota Public Library News

(Canastota, NY – Feb. 2013) February is a very busy month at the Canastota Public Library. The library will hold several talks and a tea and the library will also begin its regular children’s weekly programming this month.

Ev Thompson is our Artist for the month of February.  Ev will be displaying her stained glass creations in the Lawson Community Room.

Twenty-five years ago, Thompson attended a six-week community college art course to learn the art of stained glass and she has been producing items ever since then.  She can make stained glass windows and objects of all shapes and sizes. Thompson will even do commission pieces based on a photograph.  Her subject matter ranges from flowers to animals to abstract pieces.  Making stained glass items requires skill and precision as well as the eye of an artist.  Thompson’s talent is displayed in this beautiful exhibition.

Author Nariman Jiries will read her book, “Grace-a-Lena Learns the Meaning of Self-Esteem” at a Fairy Tea to be held at the Library on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. The tea is open to Mothers, Daughters, Grandmothers and Aunts who would like to attend.  The program is geared for girls up to age 10.  Festivities will include tea and lemonade, cookies, a craft and a reading of “Grace-a-Lena.”

Please contact the library to reserve your space.  Girls should feel free to come dressed as fairies or princesses or dressed in their best clothes. The book, “Grace-a-Lena” will be available for purchase.

The Canaltown Talks will continue at the library on Monday, Feb. 11 with “History of Manufacturing in Madison County” by Matthew Urtz, Madison County Historian.  This hour-long program will begin at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the library.  A question and answer period will follow.  Light refreshments will also be served.  This program is sponsored by The Canal Town Corporation.

Forks Over Knives—the book, the film, the movement—is back again in a Cookbook.  On Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. join us for a cooking demonstration by our own Angela Rigler.  Angela, who will be assisted by her husband Karl, has been working her way through all of the recipes in The Forks Over Knives Cookbook.  She will explain this plant-based cookbook and its importance and create two entrees for taste-testing. Thousands of people have cut out meat, dairy, and oils and have seen amazing results using these recipes.
