(Wampsville, NY – Dec. 2013) Morrisville State College and Colgate University recently won $900 grants to expand special events and sports recycling programs on their campuses.
The grants were awarded by the NYS Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling (NYSAR3). “The competitive grant program was open to NYSAR3 college council members to promote recycling in New York State colleges,” said Madison County Landfill Director James Zecca. “Having two of the grant recipients right here in Madison County shows a real commitment to recycling in our local area.”
Morrisville State and Colgate University were two of five colleges to receive grants. Projects funded had to involve initiating, improving or expanding reduction, reuse, recycling and composting projects on college campuses. Grant amounts ranged from $300 to $1,000, the maximum available for any one project proposal.
Other schools receiving grants and the type of project to be funded include: the University at Albany, office composting; SUNY Cobleskill, vermicomposting; Orange Community College, expansion of its existing Terra Cycle program. The NYSAR3 college council awarded a total of $4,100 in grants, which were announced and presented at the organization’s fall recycling conference in Cooperstown recently.
