trout opening day (1)(Chittenango, NY – April 1, 2014) Many anglers stayed home opening day last week, claiming “Fishing is for the birds,” due to well-below-freezing temperatures at sun-up and high waters from the weekend melt and rain.

Arriving at Chittenango Creek by 6:30 a.m., Don Shetler of Cicero and his fishing partner Brad Raineri of Chittenango were just lamenting how they had been there four hours without as much as a bite. Shetler didn’t even have the words out of his mouth when his fishing rod bent in half with this 16-inch brown trout.
