Morrisville State women roll to 4-1 victory over Southern Vermont

(Morrisville, NY – Sept.  2014) The Morrisville State College women’s soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over Southern Vermont College Sept. 3.  With balanced scoring and assisting from five players, the Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the road.

Morrisville dominated play throughout the game, scoring their first goal just over a minute into regulation.  Paris Matteo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) found the back of the net off an assistant from Bethany Lewis (South Otselic, N.Y.) to take the early lead.  Eighteen minutes into the first half, Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Amber Welsh (Cortland, N.Y.).

Half way through the second half, Baxter scored her second of the game after beating the defense. Southern Vermont put their only goal of the game at the seventy minute mark.  Morrisville scored the game’s final goal less than two minutes later, with Matteo netting her second of the day.  Cassandra Premo (Taberg, N.Y.) assisted the fourth goal.

Welsh, Peckham named Mustang Athletes of the Week

The Morrisville State College athletics department has named sophomore Amber Welsh (Cortland, N.Y.) and junior Danny Peckham (Webster, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week, for their play over opening weekend.

Welsh-MOR-2014-WSCWelsh, midfielder for the women’s soccer team, tallied the game winning goal for the Mustangs in the 2014 season opener, chipping the cross over the head of the keeper in the 1-0 victory over Maritime on Sunday.

The sophomore is a graduate of Cortland High and is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Sharon and David Welsh of Cortland.

Peckham registered a goal and an assist in the opening round of the Flower City Tournament for the men’s soccer team, against preseason nationally ranked #13 University of Rochester, from his center back position.

He assisted the first goal for the Mustangs minutes before the close of the opening half, sending a free kick to the left post that was headed into the net for the tying score.

With 2:31 remaining in regulation, Peckham made a deep run from the center back position and headed a one-time service sent towards the right post, as he was diving towards the mouth of the goal, to force the overtime period where the Mustangs went on for the upset victory.

Peckham was named the Best Offensive Player of the Tournament for his efforts over the weekend.

The graduate of Webster-Schroeder High is majoring in automotive technology at Morrisville State. He is the son of Sally Amos and Scott Peckham of Webster.

Morrisville State College junior defender, Danny Peckham (Webster, N.Y.) has been named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending August 31.
