Tyler Hall of West Edmeston was one of 67 Herkimer College students inducted into the Upsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Phi Theta Kappa provides development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas, lively fellowship of scholars and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

Lewis Awarded Merit Scholarship

Hafeezah Lewis of Canastota was awarded a Merit Scholarship award for $14,000 from The University of Findlay for the 2014-15 academic year.

Merit Scholarship awards are based on a student’s final, cumulative high school grade point average and ACT/SAT scores. Scholarships are awarded beginning with the freshman year and are renewable for up to four years (for a total of five years of scholarship aid).

Merit scholarships for transfer students are based on the student’s GPA from all previous college-level institutions.

SUNY Potsdam Students Complete Spring 2014 Internships

More than 200 SUNY Potsdam students completed one or more internship placements at companies, non-profits or campus departments in the spring 2014 semester.

This semester’s successful SUNY Potsdam interns included Carrie Hagan of Cazenovia, who interned with American Red Cross, Liverpool.

SUNY Potsdam’s internship program places students with employers whose interests align with their studies. Each student has a faculty sponsor, and earns between 1 and 12 credits toward their degree requirements for successfully completing the internship.

Magro Earns Leadership Award at SUNY Delhi

Francesca Magro of Sherburne has earned the Citizenship Award at SUNY Delhi’s Annual Student Life Leadership Award Ceremony. Majoring in Hotel and Resort Management at SUNY Delhi, Magro was among the students, faculty and staff who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to improving campus life.

Bonville Honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement

The College of Saint Rose in Albany announced that Matthew Bonville of Wampsville is one of 104 students who were honored for outstanding academic achievement.

Bonville, a senior at Saint Rose, received the Alyssa Ann Acquafredda Friday Knights Award in Special Education at the annual honors convocation held recently on the Saint Rose campus.

This award is for a junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing who has overcome adversity (physical, mental or academic) and has a passion for special education demonstrated by a commitment to the Friday Knights Program at The College of Saint Rose. Candidates submit a brief essay regarding eligibility for this award. The College’s special education faculty select the recipient.

SUNY Oneonta Students Present Research, Creative Projects

Nearly 200 SUNY Oneonta students presented original research and creative projects at the college’s annual Student Research and Creative Activity Day on March 26.

Created to recognize and promote undergraduate scholarship and creative activity, Student Research and Creative Activity Day has become the premier on-campus event for academic student exhibition. A total of 191 students, supported by 73 faculty sponsors, participated in this year’s event, which featured presentations on a wide variety of topics across academic disciplines.

The following area students were among the presenters:

Kaitlyn Alongi of Chittenango worked with Shih-Ming Hu of the Department of Human Ecology on a project titled “Acceptability of Chia Seeds as a Fat Replacer in Blondie Brownies.” Alongi was the primary presenter for the project. Alongi was also a co-presenter for a second project titled “The Overall Acceptability of Greek Yogurt as a Fat Replacer in Cheesecake.”

Chelsea Ghent of Bouckville worked with Dona Siregar of the School of Economics and Business on a project titled “Do ESG Characteristics Affect a Firm’s Performance?.” Ghent was the primary presenter for the project.

Courtney Kurtz of Sherburne worked with Dawn Hamlin of the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Special Education on a project titled “Lit- Does it fit? Portrayals of People with Disabilities in Literature.” Kurtz was the primary presenter for the project.

Lauren Warren of Oneida worked with Rebecca Harrington of Student Health Services on a project titled “Blame the Red Cup: Lessons From Negative Experiences With Alcohol at SUNY Oneonta.” Warren was the primary presenter for the project.

Colby-Sawyer College Celebrates 2014 Graduates

Graduated from Colby-Sawyer College on May 10 was John-Luke Tierno of Cazenovia, who graduated with a bachelor of arts in media studies.

Students Earn Degrees from Binghamton University

William Wolfgang Rheinheimer of DeRuyter recently earned his degree from Binghamton University.

Roy of Canastota Wins Scholarship at SUNY Oswego

Andrea D. Roy of Canastota has won one of 11 Empire State Diversity Honors Scholarships this year at SUNY Oswego. The SUNY-sponsored program of direct aid seeks to attract and retain undergraduate students to SUNY campuses who have demonstrated high academic achievement and can demonstrate that they will contribute to the diversity of the student body.

She is a member of the class of 2016 majoring in wellness management. She is the daughter of Yumi and Jeff Roy of Brooklyn. She hopes to attend graduate school to become a physician assistant.

Oot Named to Dean’s List at York College

Travis Oot of Kirkville, a senior accounting major at York College of Pennsylvania, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester. To be eligible for this honor, a student must be registered for at least 12 academic credit hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Nazareth College Announces 2014 Graduates

Nazareth College undergraduate students earned their bachelor’s degrees at the 87th annual commencement ceremony that took place at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester May 11.

Nicholas MacLane of Chittenango earned a bachelor of arts in music, Gretchen Erlichman of Waterville earned a bachelor of music in music performance, Rosemarie Thresh of Chittenango earned a bachelor of music in music education, Kristi Custer of Truxton earned a bachelor of science in business administration, Jack Giles of Chittenango earned a bachelor of science in business administration and Kelsey Hatch of Oneida earned a bachelor of science in communications science and disorders.

Chanatry Awarded St. Lawrence Fellowship

Hannah C. Chanatry of Cazenovia has been awarded a St. Lawrence University Fellowship for a summer 2014 research project. A member of the Class of 2015 at St. Lawrence, Chanatry is majoring in English and performance and communications arts. Chanatry graduated from Cazenovia High School.

Chanatry’s University Fellowship project is titled “Rome-ing” the World: An Exploration of the Laurentian Experience Abroad.

Pratt Institute Awards Degrees to 1,337 Graduating Students

Pratt Institute congratulates 1,337 new alumni who were awarded degrees at its 125th Annual Commencement ceremony, held at iconic New York City venue Radio City Music Hall on May 16. Among them were Margret Caton of Earlville and Lisa Dudley of Cazenovia.

Elmira College Students Named to Dean’s List

Elmira College released its dean’s list for academic achievement for the spring 2014 term. The dean’s list recognizes students who have a grade point average of 3.6 or higher. Among them were:

Nazareth College Graduate Students Earn Degrees

Nazareth College graduate students were among a class of 185 earning master’s or doctoral degrees at the 87th annual commencement ceremony that took place at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester May 11. Among them were Andrew Alaimo and Patrick Abbott, both of Kirkville.

Riedman Receives Award from Clarkson

Andrea Riedman of Kirkville, a senior at Clarkson University majoring in civil engineering, received the George A. Gray Endowed Fellowship. The award was established in 1995 by George A. Gray ’43 to recognize outstanding scholarship and achievement by a first-year graduate student in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Clarkson.

Gray earned his Ph.D. degree from Yale University and taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for many years. The Gray Fellow will receive $1,000 from the fellowship endowment.

Area Students Receive Awards at St. Lawrence University

The following students received awards during St. Lawrence University’s Moving-Up Day ceremony held April 26 in Canton.

Brett M. Ford of Madison was presented with the Beta Beta Beta Outstanding Senior, which is given to the graduating senior biology major who has outstanding achievements in academics, research and departmental service. Ford is majoring in biology. A member of the Class of 2014 at St. Lawrence, Ford graduated from Madison Central School.

Jordyn A. Pasiak of Hubbardsville was presented with the HEOP Academic Excellence Award, which is awarded to a HEOP graduating senior who has demonstrated a consistently high level of perseverance, motivation and academic excellence. Pasiak is majoring in global studies and Francophone Studies. A member of the Class of 2014 at St. Lawrence, Pasiak graduated from Waterville Jr-Sr High School.
