Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County

(Madison County, NY- Sept. 2014) Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County and partners, including the NYS Center for Equine Business Development, announce registration is now open for its first ever October Equine Series.

The series will feature four educational workshops, all Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. starting Oct. 8 and ending Oct. 29, with each discussing a unique facet of equine ownership.  Equine owners and those that work with or around horses will benefit from attending these hands-on workshops that will expose participants to best practices in the industry.  Each workshop will be held at a different equine facility in Madison County and will include a brief tour of the location.

Forage and Grazing Management will be the first of the workshops and will take place at Hawk Hollow Farm in Erieville.  Topics to be covered include keeping pasture records, managing pasture on a budget, and using forage analysis to best economize feeding programs.  Attendees of this workshop will receive a free forage sampling kit with three lucky participants winning a free forage analysis courtesy of Equi-Analytical Laboratories.

Taylor’s Tack & Field in Hubbardsville will host the second workshop, The Kinematics of Equestrian Injuries.  In this workshop guests will gain knowledge about how to prevent, and treat if necessary, the most common equestrian injuries.

The third in the series is taking place in partnership with the NYS Center for Equine Business Development at their facilities at Cazenovia College.  This workshop, Business Management for Equine Owners, will inform participants of marketing, record keeping, and business plan development.  Care for Equine Injuries will be the final workshop and will cover how to care for equine injuries and include a tour of the Morrisville State College’s Equine Rehabilitation Facility where the workshop will be held.

Workshops are not discipline specific and will be beneficial to all equine owners.  Speakers include: Professor Carol Buckhout; “Grass Whisperer” Troy Bishopp; President of Brookfield Riding and Driving Association, Karen Nowak; Vice President for Marketing & Communications at Cazenovia College, Wayne Westervelt; Professor Adam D’Agostino; and Dr. Erin Morgan-Paugh, DVM, CERT.

Cost per workshop is $10.
