(Cazenovia, NY – Oct. 2014) The 2014-2015 “Art for Kids” series is underway with the second installment in this popular series scheduled for Oct. 10 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room.

Pat Hill and Jenna Wright once again invite children ages 8-14 to join them for a fun and informative program.  The October 10th program will focus on the passenger pigeon and the act of using art as a memory keeper. In addition to learning about the extinction of the passenger pigeon, children will take a look at the “Lost Bird Project,” a public art display created by sculpture Todd McGrains that showcases bird species lost to extinction.

This year marks the centennial anniversary of the death of Martha, the final surviving passenger pigeon. While her ancestors once shadowed the sky with the vastness of their flocks, Martha lived out her final days alone, in a cage at the Cincinnati Zoo; she died on September 1, 1914. The Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. now displays her preserved body as part of their permanent collection.

For the October 10th program, local artist Richard Marchant will open the session with a brief introduction about working with clay. Participants will then have the opportunity to create their own clay pigeon sculptures.

As in the past, “Art for Kids” will be offered during Cazenovia Central School half-days, and children who attend these programs will be entered to win an art kit that was generously donated by a dear friend of the Cazenovia Public Library.

Don’t miss the chance to join in the fun at the Cazenovia Public Library on October 10th. To ensure program quality, class size is limited. Stop by or call the Library at 655-9322 to reserve a spot.
