(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 2014) Did you know October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month?  According to the National Institute of Justice, 25 to 33 percent of individuals will experience domestic violence during their lifetime.  The FBI also cites domestic violence as the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44: more than auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined.

Their statistics also reveal that boys who are victims of, or witnesses to domestic violence, are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults.  Let’s take time this month to develop our awareness about domestic violence and the movement towards safe and healthy relationships for all individuals and families.  Information about domestic violence awareness, help and prevention is available on the display table in the adult fiction section of the library throughout October.

Additional information and guidance can be obtained from the Victims of Violence Program through Liberty Resources, Inc., at victimsofviolence.org or their 24-hour hotline at 315.366.5000.

October is also celebrated as Fire Prevention Month.  Children’s books about firefighters, fire prevention and fire safety are currently featured in a display across from the circulation desk.  Please feel free to browse and borrow from all of our book and informational displays.

In observance of Columbus Day, the Library will be closed Monday, Oct. 13.  We will resume our regular hours of operation the following day.

The next Community Outreach Forum is Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hamilton Public Library. This forum is open to all non-profit organizations and service providers who service an area within 15 miles of the village of Hamilton at low or no cost to the public.

Participants are encouraged to share a little bit about their organizations and the services they provide, exchange contact information and network with each other. We’ll also continue to develop our shared directory of service providers to best market our services as a cohesive group and share that information widely with the public.

If you have questions about the forum or would like to RSVP, contact Hilary Virgil at the Hamilton Public Library 315.824.3060 or email hvirgil@midyork.org.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m., the Madison County Civil War Series will host a talk by Sue Greenhagen in the Community Room at the Hamilton Public Library. Greenhagen will present “The 114th NYSV and the Battle of Cedar Creek.” There is no charge for this event.

For more information, call Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz at 315.366.2453.
