COLGATE C-GATE

(Hamilton, NY – Nov. 6, 2014) Colgate’s Ben Andersen and Jonah Bowman were named Thursday to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 1 Football Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Andersen is a junior defensive lineman with a 3.67 grade-point average in economics, and Bowman a sophomore placekicker with a 3.59 GPA. Bowman’s major is undecided.

Both student-athletes are regulars on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and Colgate’s Raider Academic Honor Roll. Andersen appeared on the two lists after his freshman and sophomore seasons, while Bowman qualified for both after his rookie campaign.

Andersen has played on the defensive line in all nine games, with starts against Cornell and Georgetown that were the first of his career. He has 11 tackles for the season, including a sack at Albany. The tackle-high this year for the Madison, New Jersey, product is four in the 19-0 shutout of Georgetown.

Bowman leads the Patriot League with a 91.7 field goal percentage (ninth nationally) and is second at 1.22 field goals made per game. He is 11-of-12 on field goals and 20-of-21 on PATs for 53 points. Bowman is within two made field goals of the Colgate season record of 13 set by Land Schwarzberg in 2002.

Schwarzberg was 13-of-17 that year to set Colgate’s record for best field-goal percentage at 76.5, and Bowman is ahead of that pace. Earlier this year, Bowman broke Schwarzberg’s record for consecutive made field goals in a season when he connected on nine straight before missing Oct. 18 at Yale. The Wyomissing, Pennsylvanian, native has made his last two since that lone miss.

Bowman twice has been named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week (Sept. 13 and 20). He was ECAC Special Teams and CFPA National Placekicker of the Week after a 4-of-4 field goal performance and 13 points Sept. 13 at Delaware.

Andersen and Bowman now are eligible for the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Team, which is announced Dec. 4.
