(Utica, NY – Feb. 2015)  On Friday Jan. 30 the Utica Zoological Society presented the 13th Annual John J. & Wilma B. Sinnott Conservation Award to the Oneida County Public Market. The award was established to recognize the efforts of local individuals or organizations that are dedicated to the preservation of the earth’s wildlife and natural resources.

The Oneida County Public Market was spearheaded by Oneida County with the support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and other stakeholders in 2012 and is located in the historic Union Station in Downtown Utica. Local farmers and vendors sell homemade and home-grown products every Saturday during the summer and on a monthly basis during the winter.

By purchasing goods and services that are produced locally and regionally, consumers help cut down on the earth’s natural resources needed to transport and refrigerate goods.

The Oneida County Public Market is also revitalizing the long-empty Railway Express Building, conserving and preserving history in the process.

Beth Irons, the Market Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the Oneida County Public Market.

“I love what I do, and I love the people that I work with,” Irons said.
