letters-to-the-editor.image_To the Editor,

(Madison County, NY – Feb. 20, 2015) This letter is in response to the Families Cannot Be Caregivers Forever Campaign.  I depend on my family a great deal because I have a disability.

I am fortunate to have my own apartment and my parents live next door.  They help me with a lot but I am proud to be somewhat independent.  As a thirty two year old, I am concerned about what may happen to me, as I get older.  In fact, it scares me just the thought of not having my parents around.  However, someday I know I will have to face the fact that my parents can no longer be my caregivers.  Then what will I do?

Governor Cuomo, please include funding in your budget to meet the need for additional supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities.  If you had to walk in my shoes and have a disability how would you handle being dependent on people and government to live?  I have spent my entire life asking for help and I wish I did not have to.  Imagine on these cold days asking someone to zip up your coat for you, as I have to do every morning.  It makes me feel like a child.

Because of my disability, I have met some wonderful and caring people.  For that, I am thankful.

Sincerely,

Ashley Tyler
