oneida-public-library(Oneida, NY – Feb. 2015) Historian, teacher and regular instructor at Oasis Senior Living in Syracuse, Tom Henry returns to Oneida Public Library on Saturday Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. to deliver a diverting lecture entitled “Fall 1939: Between Dorothy and Scarlett,” which covers the 120 eventful days between the film premiers of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone with the Wind.”

According to Henry, “Many today remember the fall of 1939 for the release of two beloved Hollywood spectaculars; ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Gone with the Wind,’ but the 120 days in between were not so idyllic. There were rumors of war, fierce political debates in Washington and a major strike in Central New York.”

“Fall 1939” will look at the major events in the U.S. 75 years ago as a second world war loomed and people coming out of the Great Depression struggled to enjoy life.

Henry has appeared at the OPL before to deliver lectures on Central New York troops at the Battle of Gettysburg and the Elmira prisoner of war camp to standing-room-only audiences during the library’s 2013 series celebrating the Civil War Sesquicentennial.

At Oasis, Henry has conducted lecture series on many facets of U.S. history, including the Civil War, the “unknown” presidents, the Supreme Court and the Constitution.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, stop by the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., or call 363-3050.
