canastota-librarypic(Canastota, NY – March 2015) March is the month to get your submissions in for the Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest.  Entry Forms are currently available for the Writing Contest at the Library’s Circulation Desk.  Entry requirements for the contest indicate that one entry of a Poem or short story (500 -5,000 words) may be submitted.  There are four age categories for submission and entries of those age categories will be judged in the two categories of poetry and short stories.  The age categories include age 10 and under; 11 – 14 years, 15 – 18 years and 18 years and older.  Short stories and poems may be any style or subject and the contest is absolutely free to enter.  There are no residential requirements or limits.

Entries may be mailed to the Library at Canastota Public Library, Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest, 102 W. Center St., Canastota 13032.  Entries may also be dropped off at the Canastota Public Library.  All entries must be submitted to the library by the close of business on March 31 at the close of business.  Prizes will be awarded in each age and writing category.  All first place winners will receive a cash award of $25.  Second place winners will receive a $10 award.  Winners will be announced on April 13 at 7 p.m. at a special awards ceremony at the Canastota Public Library.  At that time, entrants will also have the opportunity to read their poem or short story to the audience.

The March Art Exhibit will be the Canastota High School Scholastics Submissions. National Art Honor Society Members are putting the show together. The artists include: Arianna Montefusco, Shelby McGlothlin, Rachel Bargabos, Emily Seale, Amanda Fairfield, and Olivia Palamara.  The exhibit will be in the Lawson Community Room.  It will begin after March 3.  A reception will be listed at a later date.

The Canastota Central Schools is hosting their annual Heath and Wellness Fair on Thursday, March 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.  Stop by and visit us at our booth.  We’ll be giving some items away and want to talk to you about the library.  Be sure and enter our raffle while you’re there.  And, you will want to check out all the other businesses and programs that will be attending.  There will also be student displays and presentations that night.  Hope to see you there.

On Monday March 23 at 7 p.m. Matt Urtz will present “Old and New Again:  A Hops Tale.”  Urtz, the county historian is offering this lecture as part of the Canalside Talks. The presentation will examine the history of hops, how it became a stable crop, its peak grown and why it originally failed.  Urtz will also discuss the redevelopment of the hops crop in the past fifteen years.  Images from the Madison County Historical Society and the Town of Madison Historical Society will assist in telling the story of hops in Madison County.

On Tuesday March 31 at 1 p.m. our Book Chat will talk about the book, “The Shell Seekers,” by Rosamunde Pilcher.   The novel tells the story of Penelope Keeling, the daughter of unconventional parents (an artist father and his much-younger French wife), examining her past and her relationships with her adult children.  The group meets in the Carnegie Room on the library’s second floor.  It is accessible by the elevator.

The library would like to thank the Members of the Chenango Valley Doll Club. This generous group has provided a library subscription to “Doll News,” a quarterly magazine that is published by the National Doll and Toy Collector’s Club.  The magazine is available for patrons to borrow.  It circulates for one week at a time.
