(Brewerton, NY – March 2015) Here in Central New York, we’re fortunate to have access to so many beautiful parks and historic sites. From hiking and horseback riding to swimming and fishing, there are many activities for the entire family to enjoy right here in our own backyard. This spring, join me in supporting and preserving our recreational and historic parks by paying a visit with your family and friends.

Onondaga County is home to impressive outdoor spaces that offer affordable recreation for the entire family year-round, and especially during warmer weather. Oneida Shores Park in Brewerton boasts a playground, a picnic area, volleyball courts and a beach for visitors to enjoy, while Pratts Falls Park in Manlius is home to scenic trails that lead to an impressive 137-foot waterfall. Green Lakes State Park, with two glacial lakes amidst upland forest, offers golfing, picnicking and spectacular views.

Those looking for a fun and educational day-trip will enjoy the Old Erie Canal State Historic Park, which winds all the way from DeWitt to Rome. This 36-mile stretch of the Old Erie Canal features remnants of stone aqueducts and gives visitors the opportunity to hike, picnic, bicycle, canoe and fish.

These are only a few of the many attractions to be found in our area; for more information and to see a full list of amenities available to you and your family, please visit the Onondaga County parks website (onondagacountyparks.com).

New York State’s parks and historic sites are a vital part of our community and culture, and it’s important for us to protect them so that future generations can continue to enjoy everything they have to offer. That’s why this year I’m hosting the “Canal Clean Sweep” to help bring volunteers and community members together to preserve the historic Canalway Trail. Please consider joining me on Sunday, April 19, at 10 a.m. at Lock 23 Park in Brewerton to lend a helping hand and make a difference in our community. For more information about the clean-up events in our community, please contact David Hewitt at 452-1115.

I’ll always fight to protect our environment and all of the benefits it provides to our families and our community. Should you have questions or concerns about our local parks or any community issue, please feel free to contact my office at 452-1115 or via email at StirpeA@assembly.state.ny.us.
