(Canastota, NY – May 2015) Do you know when it’s safe to move your child to the next type of car seat? Are you sure your child’s car seat is buckled in tightly enough? Did you know that children are safest riding rear-facing until they are two years old or until they reach the highest weight allowed for their rear-facing seat? Did you know that New York State law requires children to be in an appropriate child safety seat until their eighth birthday?
Parents, grandparents, and other caregivers want their children to be safe. These and all of your other questions about car seats can be answered by nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and Instructors at an upcoming car seat check.
The Madison County Health Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up with the New York State Police to hold a car seat check in Canastota on Wednesday, June 3 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.at the Tops Friendly parking lot located at 3400 Seneca Turnpike. The rain date is June 10 at the same time.
To ensure that your child’s car seat is safe and installed correctly, be sure to stop by. Trained staff will make sure the seat is right for your child, check the seat for safety, and ensure that the child and seat are properly buckled in the vehicle. Staff will teach you what you need to know to help your child ride safely.
While seats may be checked without the child present, bring the child with you if possible, so that staff can show you how the child should properly fit in the car seat. Please also make sure that you have installed the car seat in your vehicle, so that staff can check for any errors and teach you how to make any corrections. No appointment is necessary.
