Students Earn High School Degree at BOCES
(Verona, NY – June 2015) More than 170 adult students from the region completed high school this week.
The BOCES Consortium of Continuing Education (BCCE) recognized students on June 25 from its Rome, Oneida and Utica ACCESS Sites who earned their high school equivalency degree or earned a high school diploma through the External Diploma Program (EDP).
During her welcome remarks, BCCE Director Kathleen Rinaldo told the class they are particularly noteworthy in their achievements as the first group in which all high school equivalency students passed the new, more rigorous TASC exam (which replaced the GED in 2014). BCCE’s staff logged an 82 percent pass rate for its students, compared to the state’s 62 percent pass rate. Local students also had higher overall exam scores than the state average.
“I’m so proud because our students outperformed the average New York State test taker in every subject area by 200 to 400 points,” Rinaldo said. “This was a difficult, rigorous test.”
This year, 153 students earned their New York State high school equivalency. They received their certificates from MOBOCES board member Richard Engelbrecht and literacy educators Judy Pawlikowski and Shawn Fuess.
Another 20 students earned high school diplomas from the Camden, Canastota, Chittenango, Oneida, Rome, Utica and Westmoreland school districts. In addition, Naomi Fawn Emert, recently passed away and received her EDP posthumously; it was presented to her daughter. They received their diplomas from MOBOCES board member Richard Engelbrecht and EDP program assessors Susan Takacs and Jessica Holdridge.
During the ceremony, students heard from two class speakers – Bobbiejo Williamson,of Camden, and Michelle Zielenski, of Utica, both EDP recipients – as well as several leaders from the MOBOCES adult literacy programs.
