Raiders Earn Sportsmanship Award

(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2015) Good news keeps finding the Raider men’s lacrosse program.

Colgate and head coach Mike Murphy are District 2 recipients of the James “Ace” Adams Sportsmanship Award for the 2015 season. The honor comes via the U.S. Lacrosse Men’s Collegiate Officials Committee.

Initiated in 2006, the awards are presented annually to the college or university in each of the 11 officiating districts whose coaches, players and fans exhibit the best sportsmanship throughout the season. Both varsity and club (MCLA) programs are eligible, and winners are voted among district officials who are members of the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association (NILOA).

“On behalf of our team, we are very excited to be honored with this great award,” Murphy said. “I want to thank the officials association and U.S. Lacrosse for mentioning our team in such a great way.

“I know sportsmanship is very important to the NCAA, and to have our team recognized for this special award is fantastic for our program.”

Treating Game with Respect

The award exemplifies the tradition and sportsmanship in lacrosse displayed by Ace Adams, who amassed 284 collegiate coaching victories during a career that spanned five decades and included stints at Army, Pennsylvania and Virginia. At the time of his 1992 retirement, Adams had the most wins of any active Division I coach.

“The schools being honored with the Ace Adams Award have demonstrated the ability to treat all involved in the game with respect,” said Tom Sutton, chair of the U.S. Lacrosse men’s game officials’ subcommittee. “Sportsmanship is achieved when participants treat others the way they themselves would like to be treated, regardless of the level of competition.

“NILOA and U.S. Lacrosse thank these institutions for their commitment to sportsmanship.”

This year’s winners are being recognized Jan. 22-24 at the 2016 U.S. Lacrosse National Convention in Baltimore.
