(Sept. 28, 2015)  Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) announced legislation he authored to regulate birch and walnut syrup production has been signed into law (Ch. 252 of 2015).

While maple syrup production is currently regulated to ensure quality and protect product identity, no such oversight exists for the birch and walnut syrups that have seen recent growth in popularity. Assemblyman Magee’s law establishes equal regulation standards between syrup types and prohibits imitation syrups to protect producers and consumers.

“Production of birch and walnut syrups provides an excellent opportunity for Central New York farmers to grow their businesses and develop new products,” said Magee. “Establishing consistent regulations will help ensure every consumer is guaranteed a top-quality, locally made product and that farms can continue to thrive.”

Because birch and walnut syrups are produced later in the season than maple syrup, maple producers will now be able to tap into a new source of revenue while still using the same equipment, he added.

As Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture, Assemblyman Magee has continued to be a strong advocate for Central New York’s farms and rural communities. From expanding access to viable agricultural land for new farmers, to lowering age requirements to increase participation of senior citizens in community garden programs, and streamlining the creation of agricultural districts to lower taxes for farm owners, Assemblyman Magee will continue to fight for Central New Yorkers.
