colgate_logo(Madison, NY – Oct. 2015) Bob McVaugh presents on the development of Colgate University at the Madison Historical Society, 3606 South St. in Madison on Monday Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. following a short meeting for the society.

Colgate University has evolved into a campus recognized nationally for its beauty.  In this discussion we will look back over the history of the campus and identify a few moments that have been decisive for its evolution.  We will review the donation of the Payne farm in 1826, the reach toward the canal in the 1830s, and the advice of Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1880s.  The formative work of Massachusetts landscape architect Ernest Bowditch and architect Walter Chambers set the campus prior to the Second World War.

Finally the placement of Dana Arts Center in the 1960s as well as Persson Hall in the 1980s set the patterns of the modern era.

The public is invited to this free presentation.

Refreshments follow Bob’s program.
