Verona crash leads to DWI and drug charges

(Verona, NY – Nov. 4, 2015) Oneida-based state police charged a Utica man with DWI and drug charges following a one vehicle crash in the Town of Verona early Sunday morning.

At approximately 3:45 a.m. Nov. 1 Troopers Joseph Leworthy and Valerie Sgarlata were patrolling eastbound on Beacon Light Road near Patrick Road in Verona when they observed a westbound 1999 Dodge pickup truck travelling in their lane.  The truck swerved back into the westbound lane, narrowly missing the patrol vehicle, and drove off the north shoulder of the roadway, where it struck a utility pole and mailbox.  The impact sheared the pole at the base, bringing down power lines.

The driver of the vehicle, Richard L. Marcano, age 25, of Hulser Road, Utica and a 29 year old female passenger were uninjured and able to exit the vehicle.

While being interviewed, troopers observed Marcano had been consuming alcoholic beverages.  Field sobriety tests determined that Marcano was intoxicated and he was taken onto custody.  Troopers also found that Marcano was in possession of a quantity of marijuana and cocaine.  Marcano was transported to the SP Oneida barracks, where a breath test determined his blood alcohol content to be .12 percent.  Marcano was charged with DWI, Driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, seventh-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and several other traffic charges.

Marcano is scheduled to appear in the Town of Verona Court Nov. 10.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Verona Fire Department and National Grid.
