Library booksAs national party conventions loom and Election Day 2016 nears, historian Tom Henry returns to Oneida Public Library the first two Saturday mornings in June to address in a timely two-part lecture the race for U.S. president, party conventions and the roles of Big Money and the media in politics this year as in the past.

On Saturday, June 4, at 11 a.m., Henry will cover today’s topsy-turvy presidential race, the roots of voter discontent, the influence of PACs and the battles that we can expect at the conventions and beyond. In Part 2 on Saturday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m., he will take us back to nasty and controversial presidential races of the past and their consequences for society, the law and governance.

Henry, who is a retired social studies teacher and currently a very popular instructor in American history at Oasis Institute of Syracuse, has lectured at the OPL most recently on “Five Forgotten Presidents,” the U.S. at the outbreak of World War II and President James Buchanan’s disastrous term in office that led to the Civil War. In 2011, he lectured on the Battle of Gettysburg and the Union’s prisoner of war camp in Elmira during the OPL’s series celebrating the Civil War sesquicentennial.

At Oasis, Henry regularly conducts lecture series on many facets of U.S. history, including the Civil War, presidential histories, the Supreme Court and the Constitution.

Both of Henry’s lectures on presidential politics at the OPL are free and open to all. For more information, stop by the OPL, 220 Broad St., check out the OPL’s web site at www.midyorklib.org/oneida or call 315.363.3050 and ask for Tom Murray.
