Since 1983, the Friends of Lorenzo has funded the restoration and maintenance of the beloved Ellen Shipman garden at Lorenzo. Each June, the garden sets the backdrop for the annual Friends Garden Gala, where members and guests come to celebrate this significant landmark garden.

This year’s Gala held June 16, chaired by Kaleen Sessler, also marked the anniversary of a very special dedication that took place in the garden on June 6, 1976. A Norway spruce was planted in dedication to the late State Senator John H. Hughes for his vision and instrumental leadership in making it possible for the Lorenzo estate to be acquired by New York state.A commemorative stone was also placed in the garden at that

In tribute to her father, Mary Ryan was on hand with the Friends at this year’s Gala to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this occasion. In her welcoming remarks, Friends President Kate Schwartz also acknowledged Mrs. Ryan’s contributions to Lorenzo as she was a founding member of the Friends of Lorenzo.Janine Golub, Lorenzo’s master gardener over the last 33 years, was also cited by President Schwartz for her long-term dedication to Lorenzo.

With support from the Friends of Lorenzo, other upcoming events this summer include a free presentation of “Romeo and Juliet” by the Redhouse Arts Center  Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of the Mansion. Complete with epic romance, a tragic ending and sword fights, the performance is weather dependent; pre-ordered/pre-paid picnic dinners may be ordered directly from the Brewster Inn to enjoy the evening of the concert.On

On Friday, July 8 at 8 p.m., the public is again invited to enjoy a free, open-air orchestra performance by Symphoria. A special pre-concert fundraising dinner, with all proceeds to help sustain the tradition of a free Symphoria concert in Cazenovia at Lorenzo, will take place in the Ellen Shipman garden at 6 p.m.

The following weekend, the Friends are also pleased to provide support toward the 40th annual Lorenzo Driving Competition on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17.In celebration of four decades of outstanding pleasure driving exhibition, several special events are planned for the weekend; admission to the show is free. In celebration of four decades of outstanding pleasure driving exhibition, several special events are planned for the weekend; admission to the show is free. During the week of July 25-29, the 12th edition of summer camp, “Portals to the Past” at the Rippleton Schoolhouse,  will be offered to children ages 8 to 12; the worlds of art, science and nature, as well as 19th century lifeways will be explored.

Pre-registration is required and a fee is charged. In collaboration with Redhouse Arts Center, “An Afternoon Delight of Songs and Sweets” will be offered Sunday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m., will top off the summer schedule. Guests will enjoy live performances from the great American songbook and Broadway favorites. A “top hat and boa” reception will follow; pre-registration is required, and a fee will be charged.
