Gamble Mansion Lamme 4-4-16The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) continues programming to accompany the five week exhibit Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation 1863, and the March on Washington 1963 with Spaces of Enslavement / Spaces of Freedom presented by Ary J. Lamme III PhD. This program will compare the physical characteristics of spaces where people were enslaved with spaces where they were freed. Dr. Lamme will use images such as the Gamble Mansion in Ellenton FL and the Smith Mansion in Peterboro to demonstrate architectural similarities, and differences in sets of ideals.

The Spaces program is at 2 pm Saturday, June 25 at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road in Peterboro. Dr. Lamme’s program will be followed by a walking tour of Peterboro Spaces of Freedom guided by Norman K. Dann PhD.  Dr. Dann’s tour will include locations in the hamlet and the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark.

Ary J. Lamme III holds an AB degree from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, an MA from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in cultural geography from Syracuse University. He served as an instructor squadron commander in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Dr. Lamme first taught at State University College, Cortland, New York. He was a member of the geography faculty at the University of Florida for 33 years and is now an Emeritus Professor. His book, America’s Historic Landscapes (University of Tennessee Press, 1990), is listed as a core resource in the United States Secretary of the Interior’s Guide for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes (1996). Dr. Lamme was 1999 Environmental Person of the Year for Gainesville, Florida. He and his wife, Sandra, have homes in Gainesville, Florida and Cazenovia.

The Changing America exhibit is open from 1-5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 12 – 4 pm Mondays through Thursdays until July 14. The traveling exhibition is presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The development and tour of Changing America are made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): Exploring the human endeavor. The public is encouraged to attend the Changing America exhibit and program at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro NY 13134. Admission is free.
