Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) announced legislation he authored allowing individuals to rent space and equipment for brewing beer, wine or cider for personal use passed the Assembly (A.1100-B). It previously passed the state Senate, and will be sent to the governor for his approval.

“Many New Yorkers are interested in brewing their favorite beverage, but simply do not have the money to purchase expensive equipment or the space on their property for it,” said Magee. “This bill will lower the overhead costs for people interested in home brewing, while increasing demand for local produce and grain.”

In addition to providing equipment for home brewing enthusiasts, the centers would also be able to offer training courses. Licensed manufacturers could also rent out their brewery or distillery to home brewers and, in turn, help boost local farmers by increasing demand for their goods. Fruit, grain or hops sold by the centers are required under this law to be sourced in-state.

The idea for the legislation came from apple and grape farmers who wanted to create a custom center for home winemakers to boost sales of their produce, noted Magee.
