Griffo (2)State Senator Joseph Griffo announced Friday that football fans in New York will now be able to legally play fantasy sports games online.

As the latest NFL season gets underway, five companies have been granted temporary licenses after Senator Griffo joined the State Legislature this year in voting to legalize and regulate fantasy sports. Governor Cuomo signed the bill (S8153) into law this summer.

Those who participate in fantasy sports – including professional sports like football, basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR racing – can win cash prices based on how well they predict the performance of actual players.

“As daily fantasy sports contests continue to rise in popularity among sports fans, I am pleased to have passed legislation that now allows people to legally participate in this emerging recreational pursuit,” said Griffo. “Just in time for the new football season, people will now have the choice to play fantasy sports in New York if they want, and that’s the way it should be, instead of being told what they can or can’t do. A variety of measures included in this legislation will also protect those who play, ensuring a safe and fair experience for everyone who participates.”

According to the bill, requirements such as limiting players to one active and continuously used account, offering introductory procedures for players, identifying highly experienced players, and depicting accurate representations concerning the chances of winning in all advertisements will help to provide transparency and fairness across all platforms. Measures to protect the privacy and online security of players and their accounts, and requiring registrants to protect players’ funds upon deposit, as well as to segregate such funds from the companies’ operating funds, would provide players with important safety and security protections online.

Because interactive fantasy sports contests will also be taxed, an abundant source of funds will now be directed to the State Lottery Fund to provide new revenue for education in the state.
