The New York State Council on the Arts together with the Preservation League of New York State awarded a total of $202,000 in Preserve New York Grants to 26 applicants in 18 counties across New York state in 2016; among them are two from Madison County: the Oneida Community Mansion House, Oneida, received $8,000; and the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Inc., in Cazenovia received $7,000.

“With the announcement of the 2016 awards, the total support provided by Preserve New York since its launch in 1993 is over $2.2 million to 346 projects statewide,” said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League. “Preserve New York has a long track record of bolstering local preservation efforts and delivering a strong return on investment.”

Preserve New York makes grants for historic structure reports, cultural landscape reports, cultural resource surveys and building condition reports. An applicant must be a not-for-profit group with tax-exempt status or a unit of local government. State agencies and religious institutions are not eligible to apply. The program generally provides only partial support on a competitive basis. Grants are likely to range between $3,000 and $10,000.

Applications are now available to eligible municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to compete for 2017 Preserve New York and Technical Assistance Grants, signature grant programs of the New York State Council on the Arts and Preservation League of New York State. A total of $306,678 is available in 2017. This includes $256,678 in funding from NYSCA, $40,000 from The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for Preserve New York projects in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and $10,000 for the TAG program from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor for projects in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. This amount will be disbursed over two grant rounds, Preserve New York and TAG in the spring, and an additional TAG funding round in the fall.

The application deadline for Spring TAG and 2017 Preserve New York is Monday, March 27, 2017. Guidelines for grants are posted on the League’s website. Prospective applicants must discuss proposed projects with Preservation League staff before receiving an application.
