At Tuesday’s weekly Rotary meeting Fran Peruzzi, and Margaret Sinclair speakers for the Herkimer Historical Society discussed the Herkimer Historical Societies upcoming exhibit on “Herkimer County’s Involvement in the Great War.”

Margaret Sinclair opened her speech with some facts about the exhibit “2017 marks the Centennial anniversary of the United States involvement in The Great War (1914-1919).

On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked congress to declare war on Germany with the impetus of unrestricted submarine warfare involving American ships.”

Fran Peruzzi discussed the Banner Project. “We are working on a Banner Project that will feature the picture of a World War 1 soldier from Herkimer County. These banners will hang on light poles in the community that the solider lived.”  If community members are interested in sponsoring these banners they can contact the Herkimer Historical Society.

The WWI Centennial Exhibit will open on April 26th from 4:00-7:00pm, the public is invited to join the Historical Society for our opening of our new display followed by a free program at 7:00 p.m. by Cheryl Pula on “The Lost Battalion” based on the American regiment caught behind enemy lines in the Argonne Forest.
