Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) announced he has introduced legislation to create a toll-free number administered by Cornell Cooperative Extension to address questions and issues related to farming (A.7393).

“New and beginning farmers are often unfamiliar with the myriad of programs and services our state offers to help their business grow,” said Magee. “There’s always more to learn about new policies, farming techniques and expanding one’s consumer base. This hotline will be a critical resource for New York State farmers.”

The hotline would offer information for farmers and anyone interested in entering the agricultural industry on topics including farm management, finances, grant opportunities, research and marketing. Cornell Cooperative Extension uses research and education to provide resources and programs to communities, and they’re uniquely equipped to administer the hotline, noted Magee.

New York state currently has 36,000 farms that supply a variety of products for the food and beverage industry; however, many of the state’s farmers are aging. Nearly 30 percent of the state’s principal farm operators are 65 or older, with an average age of 57 years old. Since 21 percent of farmers have 10 years’ experience or less, it’s especially important to support new farmers and encourage the next generation to pursue agriculture, Magee said.

“Growing our economy remains my top priority,” said Magee. “This hotline will make it easier for farmers to grow their business by connecting them with the many services our state offers to agricultural businesses.”
