On Saturday, April 22, 15 4-H volunteers and members from Herkimer County gathered at the Young’s General Store and Ace Hardware of Ilion to learn about backyard composting. 4-H members learned what to do with kitchen, garden and yard scraps.

They learned how to expand recycling efforts that include kitchen scraps and yard debris by playing games and sorting things that would normally be thrown away into a landfill. They are now equipped with the knowledge of how to turn yard waste and food scraps into a valuable resource for their garden.

This workshop was open to all 4-H members and volunteers to come learn about how to get their backyard compost started. 4-H educator Wendy Richardson also helped participant make a composter out of a garbage can and decorate it to take home.

4-H members participating included:  Gami, Ahna, and Coco Brackett; Asaiah, and Elijah Muha; Luke and Logan Humphreville; Bo Alesia; Kevin and Anna Marie Meyers.
