Sullivan based state police charged a Canastota woman with felony DWI following a traffic stop for speeding Wednesday evening.

At approximately 9:05 p.m. on May 10, Trooper Steven Fountain stopped a 2008 Toyota for driving 70mph in a 55mph zone on State Route 31 in the Town of Lenox.

While speaking with the driver, Amber A. Blanding, 37, of Route 31, Canastota, Fountain detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on her breath. Sobriety tests indicated Blanding was intoxicated and she was taken into custody for DWI.

Blanding was processed at the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined her blood alcohol content was .14 percent. A DMV check revealed a prior DWI conviction for Blanding within the past 10 years.

Blanding was charged with felony DWI, Driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, speeding and refusal of a breath screen. She is scheduled to appear in Lenox Town Court May 23, 2017.

Crash leads to DWI charge at Turning Stone Casino

Oneida-based state police charged a Syracuse man with DWI following a one car crash at the Turning Stone Casino early Thursday morning.

At approximately 4 a.m. on May 11, Troopers Andrew Maurer and Steven Fountain were dispatched by Oneida County 911 to a one-car property damage accident in the parking area of the Turning Stone Casino in the Town of Verona.

Upon arrival, troopers found that a 2006 Cadillac CTS had been travelling northwest along a roadway on the casino grounds and struck a curb before driving across the lawn and striking a tree. The troopers interviewed the driver, Noble B. Smith, Jr., 32, of Syracuse, and detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

Smith stated that he had been distracted by talking on his cell phone prior to losing control of his vehicle. Sobriety tests indicated Smith was intoxicated and he taken into custody for DWI.  Smith was processed at the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined his blood alcohol content was .15 percent.

A DMV check revealed Smith’s driver’s license was in a suspended status. Smith was ticketed for DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, aggravated unlicensed operation third degree, using a cell phone while driving and other traffic charges.

He is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court May 16, 2017. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Oneida Nation Police Department.
