One local small business was recognized during National Small Business Week at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 19 annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon in Syracuse Friday, May 5.

Small businesses are selected for the Excellence Awards based on their company’s longevity, innovation, sales growth, increased employment, ability to overcome adversity or community contributions.

Berkshire Bank honored Halpin’s Fuel Service, Inc., owned by Tim Halpin and based in Forestport, with a 2017 Small Business Excellence Award. Halpin’s Fuel Service, Inc. is a locally owned and operated fuel company in Forestport. The company is a local supplier in this area of the north country.

Halpin’s Fuel provides excellent service and has developed loyal customers throughout the rural communities of Floyd, Holland Patent, Remsen, Barneveld, North Utica, Deerfield, Boonville, Old Forge, Forestport, and Brantigham. Halpin’s sales and customer base are very stable. The business prospers through a family effort with Tim overseeing the day-to-day operations and his wife Karen overseeing the office and billing.

“The 19th Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon gives us the opportunity to celebrate our business community leaders for their small business successes,” said Bernard J. Paprocki, SBA Syracuse district director. “Entrepreneurs find success not by avoiding failure but by dreaming the impossible and taking chances. From Main Street stores to cyber merchants and all the companies in between, small businesses keep our economy innovative and vibrant.”
