Accomplished club and collegiate coach named top assistant
Colgate volleyball head coach Ryan Baker has announced the addition of Jeannette Scherer to his staff for the upcoming 2017 season. A former All-American player at Clemson, Scherer will be returning to Hamilton after previously serving as the Raiders’ assistant during Colgate’s 2012 Patriot League Championship season.
“I am thrilled to welcome Jeannette back to our program,” said Baker. “She is exactly what I was looking for in an assistant. Jeannette understands what it takes to compete and win at the highest level.
“I had the opportunity to work with Jeannette in 2012 and I always knew that I would love to work with her again,” Baker continued. “In just her short time with us, I felt our team benefited so much from her training as well as her unique ability to connect and relate. Jeannette will greatly enhance our gym culture as I am positive that our players will improve tremendously under her tutelage.”
Scherer, formerly Jeannette Abbott, comes to Colgate after spending the past year as the Assistant Director and Coach at 303 Volleyball Academy in in Colorado. She directed and led the programming for all outside and pin hitters, focusing on all aspects of development including weight room programing, nutrition management, on-court strategies, drills and fundamentals. Scherer supervised and managed 40-plus staff members and ensured superior management and coordination of club staff.
Prior to her stint at the 303 Volleyball Academy, Scherer served as the Assistant Director of the Toledo Volleyball Club. She served as the Director of Recruiting for the entire organization, maintaining relationships with high-profile leaders in the industry and developing appropriate strategies for each unique individual.
A Raider Once Again
Scherer spent the 2012 season as a member of the Colgate staff under Baker, helping guide the team to its fifth Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Raiders finished 17-14 overall in 2012, including an impressive 12-2 mark in Patriot League play.

Scherer also had collegiate coaching stints at Toledo, Saint Louis University and Virginia Tech prior to her first job with the Raiders.
Scherer put together a stellar career at Clemson as she was a two-time All-ACC selection and was tabbed as an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American in 2006. A four-year starter, she led the Tigers to the 2007 ACC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008 as a team captain. Scherer was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2005, was voted onto the All-Rookie team and was a three-time AVCA All-East Region honoree.
She ranks high on several all-time lists for the Tigers as she is third all-time in kills with 1,793 and first in total attempts with 5,425. Scherer is fifth all-time in kills per game at 3.86 and is one of five players in Clemson history to amass over 500 kills, 1,000 digs and 200 blocks in her career. She holds the rookie record for kills at Clemson with 515 and attempts with 1,502. Scherer also finished in the top-10 in the ACC in kills per game all four years.
Scherer graduated from Clemson with her bachelor’s degree in marking in 2009. She is married to Andrew Scherer. Scherer replaces former long-time Colgate assistant Kristin Baker who was recently named the head coach at Hamilton College.
