The Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce has named Oneida Public Library Member of the Month for July. Oneida Public Library, founded in 1924, is chartered by New York State to serve the residents of the OPL Special Legislature District, which is coextensive with the Oneida City School District.

Its mission is to provide free-of-charge books and other library resources, information, cultural enrichment and community space for all its district’s people. In 2016, it had 15,526 registered borrowers; a total circulation of 75,582 items; 11,638 users of public computers; 8,756 users of the public WIFI; and an attendance of 80,924 individual visits.

It offered 492 program sessions for adults, young adults and children for a total attendance of 8,352 people. (N.Y.S. Annual Report 2017).

The OPL is one of 42 public libraries in the MidYork Library System, which provides network and WIFI support as well as other library services. The OPL regularly sponsors and hosts musical, artistic, cultural and historical programs for both adults and children.

Among the highlights in 2016, the OPL ran a successful Summer Reading Program that included a CNY Arts-sponsored program, “OPL’s Children’s Drama Workshop”; free concerts by the Silverwood Clarinet Choir, the Thirsty Ragtime Trio, Chad Miller and members of the Ol’Tyme Fiddlers Association and Opus Black String Quartet. The OPL also offered a watercolor/mixed media art workshop taught by Carol Cotten, several lectures on American history and several public information programs.

The library provides meeting space for tutors, businesses, clubs and service providers and acts as a social destination for individuals who simply want to connect with others. In addition, OPL continues to work hand in hand with other local organizations to help make Oneida a strong and vibrant community. Oneida Public Library is located on 220 Broad St., Oneida and is open MondayThursday 9-8, Friday 9-5 and Saturday 10-4.

Business of the Month program is part of an ongoing effort by the Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce to honor a deserving member business each month for their contribution to the quality of life and economy of our community.
