Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the scene of a two-car motor vehicle accident, with reported entrapment, that occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. The accident was reported at the intersection of Cole and Stratford Streets in the town of Madison.

What has been determined so far is an SUV, operated by Brittany Leuenberger, 25, of Madison, was driving in a westerly direction on Cole Street when a sedan operated by Patricia Fleming, 85, of Oriskany Falls, entered the intersection from the north, from Stratford Street, in front of Leuenberger’s vehicle. The two vehicles collided in a broadside manner.

Leuenberger was able to self-extricate from her vehicle, and was treated on the scene. She was transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton where she was released.

The first arriving deputy to the scene went to Fleming’s vehicle and entered into the back seat, applying head stabilization to aid in opening her airway until paramedics arrived.

Extrication was required to free Fleming from her vehicle. Fleming’s multiple injuries were critical and a helicopter was requested to transport her to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.

As her condition deteriorated, medics from the helicopter assisted Madison Ambulance at the scene, and she was transported by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Both were wearing seatbelts.

Sheriff’s investigators remained on the scene to conduct accident reconstruction until approximately 2:15 p.m. The investigation continues.

Madison Fire Department, Madison Ambulance and Mercy Flight assisted on the scene.
