Mayor Stephanie Miner

A celebration of Women’s Equality Day has been organized for Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, on the Hamilton Town Green, beginning at 11 a.m. Women’s Equality Day celebrates the day in 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment (women’s right to vote) was adopted. This year’s celebration encourages women to run for public office.

At 11 a.m. at the gazebo on the village green, the celebration will be launched by RuthAnn Loveless, mayor of Hamilton. The keynote speaker, Stephanie Miner, mayor of Syracuse, will follow. After her talk, local women currently holding or running for office will briefly introduce themselves.

The celebration is organized by the Women’s Rights group of Madison-Chenango Call to Action: MC CTA is a non-partisan group of citizens in Southern Madison and Northern Chenango Counties. We are working together in support of the rights of all community members and to uphold the democratic principles that make our nation strong and diverse. MC CTA is committed to non-violent democratic action. https://www.madisonchenangocta.org/.

The text of the 19th amendment reads:

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
