Players of Utica opens its 105th season with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Nick Abounader directs this highly entertaining, and very amusing musical by Rachel Skeinkin and William Finn, with musical direction by Bonnie Hibbard. This is the first of three musicals scheduled for the 2017-18 season, a departure from the usual genre mix for a Players season. Subscriptions and single tickets are available for purchase online anytime or at the box office during performances.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; only one speller leaves a winner! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a fast-paced crowd pleaser and an instant audience favorite.
