Oneida area Crop Walk to hold organizational meeting Oct. 2

Heralding the start of the Oneida Area Crop Walk Awareness month, there will be a meeting of all interested volunteers and team captains at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at Cochran Memorial Presbyterian Church, 11 State St., Oneida Castle, to plan a successful fundraising and awareness event.

According to Michael Yeoman, 2017 Oneida Area Crop Walk chairperson, there are many volunteering opportunities for people of all ages to participate in.

“The Oneida Area Crop Walk will engage a broad cross-section of our local communities in service to our neediest residents as well as those in communities throughout the world,” Yeoman said. “Our goals are to raise funds to help hungry people, raise awareness of hunger as an issue locally and globally, engage and train volunteers for community service, and create an event that brings together persons of many ages and backgrounds for a common endeavor.”

Yeoman is hopeful for more youth and family participation this year.

“Our youth are the next generation whose involvement may help to someday end hunger,” he said, adding that participation in the Oneida Area Crop Walk can connect like-minded families, youth groups, sports teams and civic organizations for a fun, and worthwhile event.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

  • Pre-walk Sponsor solicitation
  • Team Organization
  • Route walker placements throughout the City of Oneida the morning of the walk to guide walkers around the established route.
  • Pre-Walk Day Set-up: Volunteers are needed to help set up registration tables, chairs, etc., and work registration tables
  • End of walk refreshment distribution
  • Clean up

The Oneida Area Crop Walk will be held Sunday, Oct. 29. Registration begins at noon at the First Presbyterian Church of Oneida. The walk begins at 1 p.m. from the same location.
