U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement in response to the Washington Post report that military officers who were responsible for preventing sexual assault in the military were charged with committing rape and sexual assault:
“This report should shock and appall every single member of Congress. We have seen scandal after scandal in the military. Congress should finally be out of excuses to continue protecting the status quo that harms our service members and protects predators. I would ask every senator, particularly those who have vigorously opposed my bill to take these matters outside the chain of command, to look at this and reevaluate their position. To do less is to knowingly perpetuate a failed system.”
