Verona crash leads to DWI and weapon charge

Oneida-based state police charged a Syracuse man with DWI and weapon charges following a two-car crash in the town of Verona Saturday evening.

At approximately 10:50 p.m. Nov. 11, Trooper Terry Horton was dispatched by Oneida County 911 to a two-vehicle property damage accident on State Route 365 in front of the Turning Stone Casino.

The accident investigation revealed that a 2007 Nissan operated by Kenet S. Staten Jr., 24, of Brewerton, was traveling southwest on State Route 365 when a 2000 Subaru traveling northeast on Route 365 operated by Brian K. Wilson, 48, of Syracuse, failed to yield the right-of-way and made a u-turn in front of the Staten vehicle, causing both vehicles to collide in the intersection.

While interviewing Wilson, Horton observed an odor of alcoholic beverage on Wilson’s breath, and sobriety tests indicated Wilson was intoxicated. Wilson was taken into custody for DWI, and a DMV check showed his driver’s license was suspended.

Further investigation revealed that there was an active order of protection in place between Wilson and his 47-year-old female passenger. A stun gun was also located inside the vehicle.

Wilson was processed at the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined Wilson’s blood alcohol content to be .13 percent.

Wilson was charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, second-degree criminal contempt, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Wilson was transported to the Oneida County Jail to await arraignment and will appear in Verona Town Court at a later date.
