On Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, Syracuse Police received a report of a stolen silver Volkswagen Passat.  The vehicle information was broadcast to all Onondaga County police agencies to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle. At approximately 4 p.m., a trooper observed the vehicle on Oswego Road in Clay and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop and continued northbound on Oswego Road.

As the vehicle entered Oswego County, it attempted to hit another marked state police vehicle head-on. The trooper drove off the road to avoid being struck. The vehicle continued northbound, and Fulton City Police assisted by deploying a tire deflating device across South 1st Street near the city line. The driver avoided the device and turned onto State Route 481, traveling north, then continued onto South 4th Street. The vehicle struck another vehicle at the intersection of Oneida Street, disabling the stolen vehicle, and state police took the driver into custody.

An investigation into the incident determined the driver, Darien R. Sampson, 30, of 301 Tioga St., Syracuse, was driving while impaired by drugs. A Border Patrol K9 unit arrived on scene, and the canine alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. Methamphetamine/MDMA was located inside the vehicle. The vehicle was determined to have been stolen from a family member.

Sampson was charged with one count each of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd degree, a class “D” felony, and felony Driving While Ability Impaired by drugs due to a prior conviction. He was also charged with two counts of Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd degree, and one count each of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree, Resisting Arrest, Unlawfully Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd degree, Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the 2nd degree, all class “A” misdemeanors.

Sampson was also charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 3rd degree, and Reckless Driving, both misdemeanors, and several vehicle and traffic law violations.

Sampson was arraigned in the town of Volney court and remanded to the Oswego County Justice Center in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to return to court on January 8, 2018.
