A late morning fire on New Year’s Day has left a Brooklyn Street family homeless and without any of their possessions.
Just before 11 a.m., the Eaton Fire Department responded to the home of their former Chief Mike Markowski, his wife Donna and their 7-year-old grandson Aiden, according to Deputy Chief Kyle Riedl. They found heavy fire in the rear addition of the structure and were on scene for approximately six hours in freezing temperatures, joined by several other area departments.
Markowski was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and was expected to be OK. The house and all possessions were a total loss, and they also lost two pets, Riedl said.
Now, the department is reaching out to the public to help their member in need.
“He had been involved in the fire department all his life and has no doubt affected many residents of our town,” Riedl said, adding Markowski continues to serve as their board chairman.
Donations can be made payable to Mike Markowski and mailed to P.O. Box 911, Eaton, N.Y. 13334. Contact the fire department to arrange pickup of any other donations. For more information, find them on Facebook or call (315) 684-3817.
