Griffo, Brindisi offering applications for collegiate scholarships – deadline April 13

Four $3,000 Scholarships Will Again Be Awarded In June to Current Or Incoming College Students By The New York Conference Of Italian-American State Legislators

UTICA – State Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C/Rome) and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) are again providing applications for the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators annual scholarship for students attending college in the 2018-2019 academic year.

This year, the winners of four $3,000 scholarships—two athletic scholarships and two academic scholarships—will  be announced in May, with a formal awards ceremony to follow June 4 at the conference’s annual Italian-American Day in Albany. Applications are available by contacting Griffo or Brindisi’s office.  Completed forms should be returned to either legislator’s office by Friday, April 13.

“From tuition to paying for textbooks, attending college can be a very expensive and costly endeavor for many. These scholarships can help to provide local students and their families with a great opportunity to cover some of those costs. That is why I encourage area students to apply for these scholarships so that they can hopefully get some help with their college-related expenses,” said Griffo.

“These scholarships are an outstanding opportunity for students to get some help with the cost of a college education.  I encourage anyone who is in college, or starting college this fall to complete the application available from my office.  I always encourage students and their families to take every opportunity to reduce the financial burden of attending college, including utilizing scholarships such as this one; financial aid; and student loan programs,” said Brindisi.

Applicants for either scholarship are being asked to demonstrate a grade point average of 85 or above; financial need; participation in community service and school activities; and good conduct, and the willingness to pursue a higher education degree.  Students should reside in Griffo or Brindisi’s legislative district and be attending college in the 2018-2019 school year.

Griffo and Brindisi are both active members of the Conference of Italian-American State Legislators.  Griffo is a Past President of the organization, and Brindisi serves on this year’s Executive Committee.  The Conference works to highlight Italian-American contributions to the State in areas including literature, the arts, politics, and architecture, and to work to dispel negative stereotypes of Italian-Americans.

Area students may request an application by calling Griffo’s office at (315) 793-9072, or Brindisi’s office at (315) 732-1055.
