State Police arrest 120 people for driving while intoxicated during Super Bowl Weekend
The New York State Police today announced that troopers issued more than 7,700 tickets during a special STOP DWI traffic enforcement period over Super Bowl Weekend.
During the campaign, which started on Saturday, February 3 and ran through 3:00 a.m. on Monday, February 5, 2018, State Police increased patrols and conducted sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. The initiative was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and was also carried out by local law enforcement agencies across the state.
New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II said, “Making the right choices when getting behind the wheel will prevent needless tragedies. We have zero tolerance for dangerous and distracted drivers on our highways and we remain committed to keeping our roadways safe for all. However, we urge all motorists to do their part by making safety their top priority, driving sober, and putting away their smart phones.”
During this enforcement period, State Troopers arrested 120 people for DWI, and investigated 875 crashes, which injured 137 people. State Police did not respond to any fatal crashes during the weekend.
“We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for keeping our roads safe during the Super Bowl and every day,” said Terri Egan, Acting GTSC Chair and DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner. “We urge all New Yorkers to plan how they will safely get home before they celebrate. If you’re having guests over, ask them if they have a plan on how to get home safely, whether it’s a designated driver, a taxi or a ride share. If they are unaware of it, let them know about the Have a Plan app that can assist them. And if you see someone has had too much to drink, let them stay over or call them a ride yourself.”
The Have a Plan app is free from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the NYS STOP-DWI Foundation and allows you to designate a driver, call a cab or ride share, and review the consequences of impaired driving. You can even use the app to report a drunk or drugged driver. The app is available for Apple, Android, and Windows smart phones.
As part of the enforcement, Troopers also targeted drivers speeding and aggressive drivers across the State, and issued a total of 7,733 tickets for a variety of vehicle and traffic violations.
