State Police in North Syracuse is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 481 in the town of Cicero.

On April 15, 2019, at approximately 3:02 p.m., a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee with two occupants was northbound on Interstate 481 when it exited the south shoulder of the roadway, crossed the grassy median and struck a guiderail. The Jeep then became airborne, entered the opposing lanes of traffic and struck a 2016 Chevy Express cube van (with single occupant) head-on.

Investigation reveals that the operator of the Jeep, Thomas F. Fredenburg, 70, of Baldwinsville, may have experienced a medical event causing the collision; he was pronounced deceased at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

A passenger in the Jeep, Marilou E. Fredenburg, 70, of Baldwinsville, was transported to SUNY Upstate Medical University with two broken arms and internal injuries.

The driver of the cube van, Anthony Almazi, 59, of DeWitt, was transported to SUNY Upstate Medical Center with internal injuries.

The investigation continues.
