May 13, 2019: LEGO building session

The Cazenovia Public Library invites children ages 5 and up to the Community Room at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 13, for the chance to channel their inner architect and get building. Museum educator Pat Hill will lead “LEGO My Library,” a fun, hands-on program for young builders.

Participants will have access to the library’s vast collection of LEGO construction toys. The program will feature time for creative construction inspired by participants’ imagination.

The library is a place of imagination and discovery. Programs like “LEGO My Library” allow children to socialize, be creative and see their imaginings come to life. Construction toys offer significant educational benefits to children of all ages. Not only is hands-on play fun and exciting, but it also helps to develop motor and spatial skills, ingenuity, critical thinking, social and language proficiencies and more.

May 15: Dorothy Riester documentary by local filmmaker

The library will welcome filmmaker Susie Cody to the Community Room to present her documentary “Art on the Hill: Dorothy Riester.” The 32-minute film — directed, produced and edited by Cody — will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.

The film tells the story of sculptor, conservationist and visionary Dorothy Riester and the founding of the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park.

Cody grew up in Cazenovia and was a regular visitor and supporter of the Art Park. She studied filmmaking at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Art on the Hill was an official selection of the 2019 Bare Bones International Film & Music Festival.

The documentary was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

May 17: Library to host rescheduled Irish music concert

The library invites folk and Irish music fans to the Community Room for a special performance by The McCarthy Family. The talented musicians will return to the library at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17.

The McCarthy Family features Jim McCarthy on guitar and vocals; Deirdre McCarthy on the concertina, tin whistle, percussion and vocals; and Shane McCarthy on guitar, mandolin and vocals. The group has performed folk, pop and Irish music together since 2005 and has been featured at events across the state.

May 18: ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ to be shown

This May, the Cazenovia Public Library is celebrating 1950s cinema with a series of classic films from the decade. The library will present the 1954 science fiction film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Community Room.

A ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the Nautilus, an advanced submarine commanded by Captain Nemo.

The film is rated G and runs 127 minutes. Free popcorn provided. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

May 20: ‘Forbidden Planet’ to be shown

This May, the Cazenovia Public Library is celebrating 1950s cinema with a series of classic films from the decade. The library will present the 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet at 2 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the Community Room.

In this classic film, a spacecraft travels to a distant planet to discover the fate of a group of scientists sent there decades earlier. The crew discovers only two survivors and a deadly secret.

Forbidden Planet is rated G and runs 98 minutes. Free popcorn provided. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

May 21: Library to host history presentation on Madison County Courthouse

The Cazenovia Public Library will host a special presentation titled “Madison County Courthouse Then and Now” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the Community Room.

Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz will discuss the construction of the original courthouse as seen through the journals of HB Peckham, Construction Foreman. He will also talk about the modern renovation and efforts to preserve the courthouse’s historic characteristics.
