Every summer, the Canastota Public Library holds special programming for kids of all ages. In addition to summer reading challenges this summer, the library is planning craft days, special guests and weekly story time sessions.

The Summer Reading Program at Canastota will kick off with a Puppet Show by Puppets with Pizazz and Puppeteer Nancy Sander at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2019. The puppets will perform “The Owl & The Pussycat” in this action packed show.

Parents can sign their kids up all week long beginning July 1 through 5 for any of our scheduled summer programs. New this year for students, ages 7 to 12, is Jedi Academy Training on three consecutive Mondays (July 15 to 29) at 2 p.m. Additionally, students 7 to 12 can sign up to create space stories on two Thursday afternoons. A teen book club and discussion group for students age 12 and up, Pageturners, will meet weekly on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. to discuss various books. A book list is available at sign-ups as well.

On Wednesdays, babies and their caregivers are welcome to attend Baby & Me Lapsit at 10 a.m. In these sessions, your newborn to 24 month old and the baby’s caregiver will be introduced to the library through stories, songs and rhymes. Sensory play sessions are now being held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. instead of Lapsit. Our Baby Sensory Play Program is designed for babies and their caregivers to explore and learn by having fun at our over 20 sensory stations. Baby & Me Lapsit/Baby Sensory Play will run through Aug. 2.

Storytime with Mrs. Liz is happening on Thursdays at 10 a.m. during our summer reading program for any preschoolers who might like to attend. Storytime includes read aloud books, a craft, games and a snack. Storytime will be held through Aug. 1.

Two craft events are planned at the library. They are scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, and Wednesday, July 31, at 2 p.m. As well, every week, a different craft will be available at our Make & Take craft cart in the Children’s Area. Kids can stop in anytime to create the weekly craft.

On Monday, July 15, at 7 p.m., blast off with Commander Dave (a/k/a Moreland the Magician) on a fun voyage through outer space. Moreland’s 45-minute show is packed with magic, comedy, puppets, audience participation and several routines featuring volunteers from the audience.

On Monday, July 22, 2019, at 7 p.m., the audience will be invited to interact with live animals on an up-close and personal level by viewing, touching and asking lots of questions. REPCO Wildlife Encounters offers an educational program which is entertaining for the entire family.

The Great Space Race with Lynn Sprague will be at the library Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at 7 p.m. Join in on the fun and learn about NASA, the space race, the constellations, planets and galaxies with a Jumanji-like, floor-sized game board.

For a schedule of July events, feel free to stop in at the library and ask for the July calendar. The Canastota Public Library is located at 102 W. Center St., Canastota.
