The Hamilton Family Health Center adds a physician, Sheila Ramanathan, DO to Community Memorial Healthcare.

Dr. Ramanathan is a Family Medicine Physician with an interest in rural medicine and women’s health.  Born and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Ramanathan attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and following her mother’s professional path, decided to attend medical school.  “I was always around her practice when I was young and was fascinated with how she cared for her patients,” she says.

Dr. Ramanathan graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) with her Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine, and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York where she gained broad experience treating patients in the military and from rural settings.  This experience helped shape her desire to focus on rural medicine.  “Patients who live in rural America have different challenges and as providers, we need to be able to perform a variety of skills in order to bring them the care they need in a timely way.”  During her time as a resident, Dr. Ramanathan traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, completing mission work in Uganda, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.  From these experiences, she developed a strong passion for women’s health care, acknowledging that she has learned that there is “something to be said for women treating women.”

Dr. Ramanathan’s approach is simple-treat patients with compassion and autonomy. “We all play a role in the care of a patient, no matter who you are.”  She likes to develop a trust with her patients so they can feel confident in owning their own health care decisions.  When asked why she chose to come to Community Memorial, her answer was quick, “I was immediately impressed with how the staff (at Community Memorial) valued one another and were so welcoming.  I was also aware of Community Memorial’s reputation for low turnover, which is something special and I wanted to be a part of helping a healthcare system continue to be better in the interest of treating patients.”
