On Thursday July 11th at 7 pm the Skanonh Great Law of Peace Center in Liverpool will host a special talk on the book “Crazy Horse: The Lakota Warrior’s Life & Legacy.” Crazy Horse Family Elder Floyd Clown Sr., and author William Matson will discuss the book as told to Floyd Clown, Sr. by oral tradition. Maton’s book clarifies some of the inaccuracies about their famous ancestor’s life and legacy. Floyd Clown, Sr. was one of the three sole administrators and spokesmen of the Crazy Horse estate, will talk about the family’s generational stories, Lakota treaties, what it means to be Lakota, court cases and probates for ancestry. Artist Linda Scherz will instruct attendees on how to make the traditional pack basket utilizing weaving techniques including tapering, scarfing and packing a basket tight to create a small decorative Adirondack Pack Basket made from reed and finished off with a woven web harness. Dann will describe parts of the estate that tell the story from Dann’s publication When We Get to Heaven. Accounts of the enslaved Americans who came to Peterboro on their way to Canada, who stayed in Peterboro, who came to work in the antislavery movement, and those who attended the Manual Labor of School. The Trail to Heaven will conclude at the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, the site of the inaugural meeting of the New York State Anti-Slavery Society. This is a three-hour interactive group exercise that invites participants to experience colonization, conquest and attempted genocide of the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (the North American Continent). From Friday July 19th through Sunday July 21st the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host the 2019 Lorenzo Driving Competition. For over 40 years this event has been one of the most unique events in Madison County. On Sunday August 4th at 2:30 pm Town of Smithfield Historian Donna Burdick will host a ceremony for the installation of a burial marker for Emily Russell Hill. Hill was the child of Samuel and Harriet Sims Russell. The couple and their five children’s (including Emily) were freed at a cost of $3500 through of the efforts of Gerrit Smith and his wife Ann Carroll Fitzhugh of Peterboro. Emily was the only child who left central New York and hers is the last burial site of the 8 family members to receive a marker. Festivities will include a musical tribute by Max Smith, and honored guest Carol Waverly-Shank, the great-great grand-daughter of Emily Russell Hill.
